CD REVIEW: Healing Sounds
By Ben Ohmart - 12/30/01
There's a new new age label out there and it's exactly as labels Should be and never are. The hook of this original thought is that a nature lover cruises over to http://www.musicalacarte.net/ and listens to one minute clips of varying sounds of the world: get inspired with new age, world and the earth. Then choose - your - cd. Put it together the way you want it, not the way guys in ties think it should be assembled. There is No better way. Self-service music has Finally arrived. And in the perfect genre.
Healing Sounds is a pre-packaged commercial for what you can do yourself. This is a 50 minute, 9 track cd of healing, instrumental music from various artists and instrumentation that floats through your mind like ducks in a stream far removed from apartments, polluting cars and the general headaches man has built for himself.
The back of the disc says it all - 'Be touched by the soothing sounds of flute, clarinet, harp, piano and guitar... relax into a gentle place of flowing harmony and allow the healing to occur... Beautiful music for massage, reiki, energy work and balancing.' I don't care if you're not supposed to use others' words in a review, when the description fits utterly, it fits completely.
At the moment I am in the 'Zen Garden' and the view couldn't be lovelier. All that's required for the background of your mind is a clarinet from Shastro and Nadama's simple, browsing piano. Meditation or a quiet look around the art garden in Washington DC, it's up to you where you go in person or by thought. Such is the subjective fun of these tasteful excursions that provide simple but charming melodies by which to rule your life with compassion, honesty and non-volatile spirits.
The clarinet ensemble of 'Hillpipes' is wonderful. I'd love to hear an entire album of such serenity. Crass and uneducated minds like myself will firstly think that tracks like these would make good wallpaper for a Godfather film scene, but there's more to it than that. Ditto for the end track, 'Gardens of the Sun' by Georgia Kelly who does her harp best to let you leave the theatre in much better health than when you came in. Stephen Schultz on flute is the only other person in the room, and he's a smooth and gentle soul, he is.
Get onto the web page and start picking. Hundreds of possibilities. All of them promoting peace and relaxation, which we could all do with more of.
